Contaminated steel scrap

What is contaminated steel scrap?

Steel that is contaminated, for example by asbestos and chromium 6, can be found in various places in our society. It is used in buildings, high voltage pylons and industrial installations such as pipes, flanges and boilers. If an object is scrapped, the contaminated steel scrap must be cleaned before it can be reused. This is done under special working conditions.

This is a cumbersome, time-consuming and costly process in which people and the environment are exposed to Substances of Very High Concern such as asbestos or Chromium 6. This exposure can happen on the one hand, during the cleaning of the object and on the other hand, because asbestos-containing or other waste is created that needs to be dumped. In some cases, the steel cannot be cleaned because it is not technically or economically feasible and is dumped in designated landfills. For steel with this level of contamination, a solution is now here! The process of ´óÏó´«Ã½ is suitable for processing steel mixed with various contaminations.

Contaminated steel scrap market

Scrap is a waste product and is collected, sorted and reprocessed through an intricate network so that it can ultimately be sold in larger volumes to the steel industry. A distinction is made between iron, which is called ferrous scrap, and non-ferrous scrap, which includes metals.

Scrap is available in various places in society and comes from discarded or otherwise unusable objects or from a metalworking process. In addition, production waste from the iron and steel industry can be reused.

Scrap is traded worldwide on a daily basis, with ferrous scrap constituting the largest volume. A study by BIR (Bureau of International Recycling) Survey found that approximately 630 million tonnes of scrap has been traded worldwide.

Scrap is divided into various categories based on the degree of contamination (sand, wood, plastic), density and homogeneity. All these elements determine the cost price.

Steel contaminated with asbestos or chromium 6, for example, does not end up in the scrap trade. This material is either cleaned or, if this is not economically or technically feasible, disposed of in designated landfills. As a result, a valuable raw material is lost or high costs have to be incurred to make it suitable for reuse.

Substances of Very High Concern and the ´óÏó´«Ã½ process

Bron:

Substances of Very High Concern
´óÏó´«Ã½ process
Asbestos Will be destroyed
Chromium-6 Neutralised and captured as filter dust
Mercury Neutralised and captured as filter dust
Other heavy metals Neutralised and captured as filter dust
PAHs Will be destroyed
Dioxins Cannot occur (this is because these are not contaminations of steel, they may occur if the cooling in flue gas cleaning is too slow, but this is prevented by ´óÏó´«Ã½)
PCBs Will be destroyed
Halogens (EOX) Will be destroyed

Delivery and acceptance terms

All contaminations in combination with steel, with the exception of Low Specific Activity (LSA) or Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), hazardous and non-hazardous, can be treated in the installation of ´óÏó´«Ã½. The possible polutions may also concern Substances of Very High Concern (SHVC’s). ´óÏó´«Ã½ handles delivery terms for every type of steel scrap. The delivery and acceptance terms can be downloaded or seen here below.
